In April Chinese government issued four documents on power sector reform, which outlined long-awaited upgrades to the functioning of the world's largest power utility. The reforms cover a number of important topics, including:
- emphasize on increased use of market mechanisms, injecting competition and diversification of supply, paying more attention to environmental protection
- support of demand-side management (DSM) as a tool for improving energy efficiency and increasing the share of renewable energy and distributed generation
- introduction of specific pilot projects in the field of power sector reform, located in several major cities
