Heat pumps will play crucial role in CO2 reduction in buildings

According to International Energy Agency (IEA), heat pumps may reduce global hashtagCO2 emissions by 500 Mt by 2030 , or around 40% of total direct and indirect emissions reductions in space and water hashtagheating in buildings.

IEA plans to make all its data freely available

International Energy Agency (IEA) IS GOING TO FREE ITS ALL GLOBAL ENERGY DATA, Quantum Commodity Intelligence informed today. This will significantly improve data transparency in the energy sector as the world prepares to reduce dependency on fossil fuels and move towards a low-carbon future.

The proposal still needs to be supported by member countries at the next ministerial meeting to be held 2-3 February.

IEA proposes technological and policy pathways allowing transition to a net zero energy system by 2050

The energy sector is the source of about 75% of GHG emissions today and holds the key to preventing the worst effects of climate change.

In its recent report NET ZERO BY 2050: A ROADMAP FOR THE GLOBAL ENERGY SECTOR, IEA proposes technological and policy pathways allowing transition to a net zero energy system by 2050 while ensuring stable and affordable energy supplies, providing universal energy access, and enabling robust economic growth.

The path to net-zero emissions is challenging: staying on it requires immediate and intensive deployment of all available clean and efficient energy technologies.

Global CO2 emissions are rebounding to pre-pandemic levels

According to the Global Carbon Project, world's fossil CO2-related emissions have dropped by about 2.6 GtCO2 in 2020 to 34 GtCO2 (see figure below). This  decrease, which is equivalent to EU's annual GHG emissions, was caused mainly by the measures taken to slow the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, and it is about 7% below 2019 levels, while, in most countries, daily emissions decreased at the peak of the country’s lockdown by on average 27%.

World Energy Outlook 2019 suggests a path fully aligned with the Paris Agreement goal

WEO 2019the International Energy Agency’s flagship publication, suggests a pathway that enables the world to meet climate, energy access and air quality goals while maintaining a strong focus on the reliability and affordability of energy for a growing global population.
The path the world is on right now is presented by the Current Policies Scenario, which provides a baseline vision of how global energy systems would evolve if governments make no changes to their existing policies.

Investment stimulated by market-based instruments for energy efficiency has risen six-fold over the last ten years

IEA published the first global overview of market-based instruments (MBIs) for energy efficiency, such as auctions, energy efficiency obligations on utilities and white certificate programmes. Contrary to other policy instruments, MBIs allow market actors to choose the measures and delivery routes that provide the most cost-effective way to achieve the outcomes set out by policy makers.

Multiple benefits of energy efficiency can deliver as much as 2.5 times the value of the energy demand reduction

According to IEA, energy efficiency should be recognized as a major energy resource. Thanks to energy efficiency investments over the preceding four decades, energy use avoided by IEA member countries was larger than any other single supply side resource, including oil, gas, coal and electricity.

IEA's webinar: The Outlook for Renewable Energy

The lead authors of World Energy Outlook 2016 presented their views on current status and future of renewables, which were the subject of a special focus in this year’s Outlook.
Significant increase of renewable capacity in the power sector, which exceeded coal, gas, oil. and nuclear combined, as well as fast growth of EVs on the road to over 1 million vehicles are among the most impressive achievements in renewable energy in 2015.

Building energy use per floor area for world's major economies declined in 2000-2012 by 5-30%

IEA's report "Building Energy Performance Metrics" presents data and analysis needed to evaluate progress and identify opportunities for improvement in building energy performance. Building energy use per floor area (see the table above) provides a measure of building energy performance relative to building space.

Energy efficiency standards and labelling not only reduce appliance energy use but also induce price decline

Contrary to common assumption that raising energy efficiency levels will push up purchase prices for equipment, in Australia the real price for new refrigerators, washing machines and dishwashers, sold between 1993 and 2014, dropped by 33 - 49%, while energy consumption decreased by 20 - 44% (see the table above). The similar changes are happening also in EU countries and in the U.S. These data are presented in the recent IEA's report "Achievements of appliance energy efficiency standards and labelling programs".

IEA: energy efficiency is a key solution to climate change

According to IEA's Energy Technology Perspectives (ETP 2015), which examines innovation in the energy technology sector, energy efficiency can deliver 38 percent of what is needed to keep our planet within the two degree scenario of global warming by 2050. The technologies and solutions to make it happen already exist, and make good business sense.

IEA's key messages for UNFCCC COP21

International Energy Agency presented its four key messages for the upcoming UN climate negotiations, which could help UNFCCC shift the energy sector onto a low-carbon path while supporting economic growth and providing energy to more people. The four messages emphasise necessity to :

Energy efficiency improvements over the last 25 years saved globally a cumulative $5.7 trillion

IEA's Energy Efficiency Market Report 2015  shows that in 2014, investments in energy efficiency over the past 25 years saved IEA member countries $80 billion in fossil fuel imports. According to the report, energy efficiency improvements since 1990 in IEA member countries reduced primary energy consumption in 2014 by more than 760 million tonnes of oil equivalent.

IEA: Global energy-related emissions of carbon dioxide stalled in 2014

Data from the International Energy Agency (IEA) indicate that global emissions of carbon dioxide from the energy sector stalled in 2014, marking the first time in 40 years in which there was a halt or reduction in emissions of the greenhouse gas that was not tied to an economic downturn. In the 40 years in which the IEA has been collecting data on carbon dioxide emissions, there have only been three times in which emissions have stood still or fallen compared to the previous year, and all were associated with global economic weakness: the early 1980's; 1992 and 2009. In 2014, however, the global economy expanded by 3%. The IEA attributes the halt in emissions growth to changing patterns of energy consumption in China and OECD countries. In China, 2014 saw greater generation of electricity from renewable sources, such as hydropower, solar and wind, and less burning of coal. In OECD economies, recent efforts to promote more sustainable growth – including greater energy efficiency and more renewable energy – are producing the desired effect of decoupling economic growth from greenhouse gas emissions. IEA - from words to action on energy efficiency

The International Energy Agency today released two guides aimed at helping countries around the world develop ambitious energy efficiency policies by showing policy makers, analysts and statisticians how to better track and use data on the so-called hidden fuel. The first IEA manual, Energy Efficiency Indicators: Fundamentals on Statistics, is intended for statisticians and energy analysts collecting the needed information for the development of energy efficiency indicators. The second manual, Energy Efficiency Indicators: Essentials for Policy Making, is aimed at providing policy makers and energy analysts the tools needed to determine the priority areas for the development of energy efficiency indicators and how to select and develop the data and indicators that will best support energy efficiency policy making. In addition, the indicators provide a basis for international comparisons that can help identify best practices for effective policy design and implementation in countries. Read more>>>
