Challenges of the economy decarbonization for countries with various GDP and carbon intensity

The countries with significant CO2 emissions are mapped on diagram below depending on their GDP per capita and carbon intensity per unit of GDP.

  • Wealthy economies with low emissions per unit of GDP (U.S., Japan, EU countries)  will be able to decarbonize comparatively quickly enough to meet their aggressive stated Net Zero timelines.
  • Developing countries with low emissions (Brazil, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Philippines, and others) can decarbonize by eliminating fossil fuels and moving to clean (renewable) energy sources.
  • Relatively wealthy Gulf states with high emissions  (Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, and others) need to find new sources of revenue when the world moves away from oil
  • Large and growing polluters with lower GDP and high carbon intensity (China, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, and others) have the biggest challenges in decarbonization of their economies, which will require significant time and huge investments.
